In 2019, the Steuben County Sheriff's Office initiated the implementation of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program. The Sheriff implemented this program in response to an ambulance crisis, particularly in the rural southern half of the county. Steuben County is 1,400 square miles, and responses to emergent medical calls can take an extended amount of time. The program was completely voluntary, and to date, the Sheriff's Office has 25 EMTs between the Patrol Division and the Corrections Division. A vast majority of the funding for this program has been through donations. The Sheriff's Office has since responded to over 200 medical calls for service. This program has saved a significant number of lives from stabilizing patients in cardiac arrest, providing life saving care at accident scenes, emergency medical care for a victim of a gun shot wound, providing medical care to the victim of an ATV accident at the bottom of an 80 foot ravine, or providing next level care to supplement the administration of Narcan. This program has been a resounding success, and the response from the community we serve has reinforced our bond with the community. Equally as important, saving lives has been a morale booster for our Deputies in a difficult time for law enforcement professionals. As a result of the EMT Program, the Sheriff's Office is currently sending a Deputy to a local community college to obtain thier Paramedic Certification. We cannot think of a program that we have implemented that has had such a profound effect on the community, and our relationship with that community.
