The City of Huntington Beach has over 200,000 residents and about 11 million visitors each year. Despite the affluent communities we have in our city, we also have pockets of low-income spanish speaking communities with high gang prevalence. Over the past years the Huntington Beach Police Department has made a great effort to engage the spanish speaking communities. Some of the activities that have been implemented as a way to build a positive relationship are, tacos with a cop, revitalization activities such as improving lighting, working with apartment landlords, participating in regular community meetings and participating in ongoing community events. Most recently the Huntington Beach Police Department also translated our entire Citizens Academy in Spanish and had Spanish speaker officers teach the twelve-week course. Residents were able to learn about the police department and ask questions. This course really provided residents with a better perspective as to how the police supports the community and the resources available to the community. Overall the efforts that are being made in the community, have proven to be tremendous and the Huntington Beach Police Department will like to continue building relationships not only with the Spanish Speaking community, but all of their communities.
