The Vancouver Police Cadet program is a youth leadership program that focusses on teaching young people tangible life skills and helps them build resiliency in order to reach their full potential. The program is open to students in Grades 10 - 12. Many of the participants come into the program with very troubled backgrounds, having suffered from violence or abuse, have self-esteem issues and are dealing with other challenges. They are often from immigrant families or come from cultures that do not have positive associations with policing. The VPD established the Youth Services Section to provide a range of support for youth in the community. The goal of the Cadet program is to support these youth in graduating high school and going on to some form of post-secondary education or training. Over 90% of the graduating Grade 12 students in each Cadet class has gone on to post-secondary education or training. VPD is starting Cadet Class 8 this September. The program runs over 28 weeks from September through May.
